Bessemer Council Approves
Lane Reductions

Monday night Bessemer councilman Carpenedo, switched sides in the controversy surrounding U.S. 2 lane reductions. He sited safety issues as did Matonich and Peterson. It should be pointed out that the MDOT representative clearly stated that he could not guarantee a reduction in accidents if the lane reductions were enacted. Al Gaiss stated as Superintendent of the Bessemer School District, he had concerns over the effect the lane reductions would have on students walking on the highway. Mr. Gaiss also pointed out that 75 % of the voters and taxpayers that have contacted him were opposed to the lane reductions. This figure coincides with the two petitions submitted to the council, which were approximately 6 to 1 against the measure. Correspondence sent to IronwoodInfo closely reflect those figures presented by Mr. Gaiss.

In the end only two councilmen opposed the traffic slowdown. Mayor Frello and Councilman Al Gaiss. Voting to reduce the traffic lanes were councilmen Carpenedo, Matonich and Pterson.

In othe action, the board approved a variance request by Mr Cory Wainio of 1316 East Lead St. Mr. Wainio request approval to erect a four foot fence across his U.S. 2 front yard. The proposal was unanimously approved subject to the approval of the Planning Commission.
