KIMBALL - Little Finland in Kimball, was the
scene of Sunday’s celebration of St. Urho’s Day. Gogebic and Iron
County Finlanders spent the afternoon listening and dancing to the great
music of Dorothy and the Boys. The musical group plays and variety of
music for their audience which includes polkas, country and western and
vintage popular songs.
Just as their Ontonagon counterparts the night
before, a large group gathered for this year’s celebration. There was
plenty of purple to be seen at this venue. The festivities also included a
guest performance by Accordionist, Gary Schleis who entertained during the
band’s break. Gary is a great musician who told us that he often
entertains at Little Finland.
During the lunch break there was a 50/50
drawing. The winner of the drawing was Arnie from Wakefield, who
generously donated the money to “Little Finland”. Pictured with Arnie
wearing the yellow 50/50 shirt is Steve Schurtter
On hand at Sunday’s event was a Phil a student from
Northland College. Phil is a native American who is working on his thesis.
He needed to spend one day with a different cultural group. He certainly
did that and by day’s end Phil was dancing polkas and waltzes alike.
Dorothy’s music will do that to you!
