2010 Census Countdown Has Begun

Your Help Is Needed!

Bessemer - January 20, 2010

Jonathan Midkiff, Group Quarters Supervisor, for the 2010 Census appeared before the Gogebic County Commissioners last week. Mr. Midkiff asked the County Commissioners for their help in soliciting census workers for our area.

Midkiff discussed the need for everyone to be counted as our revenue sharing and other gimmes will depend largely if not solely on our population count.

Mr. Midkiff also clarified the fact that working for the census will not void unemployment compensation.

Of course the job is temporary, however, it is  full time employment and pays $11.25 per hour.

The clock is already ticking and the actual counting process will begin next month with the mailing of the census forms.

Facts About Unemployment Payments and Temporary Work

• Fact: If you are offered employment on a temporary basis you are still eligible to receive the remainder of unused unemployment benefits after you have completed your work assignment.
• Fiction: Working for the Census Bureau will disqualify you for your remaining unemployment benefits.
• Fact: If you are on unemployment and refuse a job offer there will be an investigation on your claim which may result in the forfeiture of the remainder of your benefits (this is on a case by case basis).
• Fiction: Turning down employment opportunities is an easy way to continue to receive your unemployment benefits.
• Fact: you may still be able to receive partial unemployment benefits if the work you do is less than a full work week (Le. under employed).
• Fiction: A field employee (or enumerator) can only work specific times of day for a total of 8 hours maximum.
• Fact: Enumerators make their own schedules as long as they do not go over the prescribed 40 hours a week unless given approval for overtime (example: if you would like to work 4, 10 hour days Monday through Thursday instead of 5, 8 hour days Monday through Friday that is up to the individual and the Crew Leader).
The U.S. Census is mandated by the Constitution of the United States of America to take place and to account for all peoples in the United States every 10 years. There are several important reasons the Census takes place including; Making a count for Representation in the House of Representatives, federal funding per populous, state and county financial assistance programs .
