What Were They Thinking?

Ironwood - February 2, 2010

One has to wonder, just how much contempt does the Sisufest Organizers have for Ironwood’s Downtown Business Owners.
Just last week there merchants held a meeting due to the financial losses sustained at the Sisufest. While the downtown merchants support the event, they do not want another repeat of this year’s losses which were incurred when the organizers barricaded of the downtown area for two days.
Now, after hearing the business owner’s complaints, the same indifferent people have rubbed salt into the wounds. Last Thursday the indifferent race organizers held a party for 150+ volunteers outside downtown Ironwood. In fact it’s outside the city entirely. The inconsiderate race organizers held the event at the Elk & Hound, which is located outside the City of Ironwood.
It’s amazing to us how thoughtless these people can be.  The group took in over $50,000 in sponsorship money and race fees.  They certainly could have sent some of it back downtown where the damage was done. The event could have been held in the Memorial Building and catered by a downtown business.
One also has to wonder, how can a school district (Ironwood) donate $600 to an event when it can not afford to pay for school events?
The same thing can be said of the City of Ironwood, broke as it is, how can the city afford to pay overtime and equipment costs for this event, and not put that money into the city’s needs instead?
