Ontonagon - The first item to come before the commission Wednesday
was a request to support the routing of the Heritage Trail through
Ontonagon County. R. J. Rotundo appear before the Commission to
explain the many benefits that come with the trail if it were to
materialize. In addition to the increased tourism throughout the county,
the county would qualify for more federal grants.
Rotundo
provided a map and a description of the proposed multi-use trail system
for the Commissioners. The trail was intended to go from the Bridge to
the Porkies. Between 350,000 and 400,000 tourist visit Porcupine
Mountain Park each year. Rotundo suggested that it would benefit the
county if the trail were to be expanded within Ontonagon County.
Chairman John Pelkola discussed several routes and historical locations
that could be added to the proposed trail. Rotundo requested that the
Commissioners get letters of support from each of the townships. No
action was requested nor necessary. Prosecuting Attorney, Jim
Jessup was scheduled to appear at the meeting with an update on the
Smufit-Stone bankruptcy hearing. Jesup was unable to appear due an
illness. Ken Berry appeared at the meeting requesting that the
Commission do something about the lack of Veteran counseling services in
the county. Evidently less than one hour per week is currently available
for Ontonagon Vets. The Commissioners passed RESOLUTION NO.
2010·05: Western U.P. Regional Revolving Loan Fund. Subject to changes
to the wording as recommended by Attorney Jesup. The Resolution is
similar to the one passed by Houghton which basically says,” we have
questions and concerns about the Regionalization plan” “But we feel it
is o.k. to confiscate our funds after you address our questions”
The Commissioners table a vote on the request by Brandon for an easement
across County owned land. The commissioners approved the
purchase of a 2010 Ford Explorer by ONTRAN. The bid was awarded to
Big Valley Ford. The purchase price was $23,448.
