Newberry Wins District Tournament

IRONWOOD - The District Eight Bantam “B” Tournament came to a close Sunday afternoon as Newbery defeated Copper Country in the Championship match.  The matchup provided the fans with a very exciting game. Within the first seven seconds of the game, Copper Country took the puck down center to score the first goal of the game.
However, the sudden attack and quick score did not rattle the undefeated Newberry players. They went on to score five straight points, to take the lead and take control of the game. Late in the third round, Copper Country made a game of it. With a Newberry player  in the penalty box, Copper Country pulled its Goalie and went at Newberry 6 men to 4. When the final buzzer ended the game the score was 5 Newberry and 4 Copper Country.
On Friday, Ontonagon was Newberry’s first victim. Ontonagon was outscored 6-3 by Newberry.

Ironwood also lost to Newberry on Saturday, Newberry 8 – Ironwood 2. Previously on Friday, the Ironwood Polar Bears defeated Munising 5-1. In a later game on Saturday the Polar Bears defeated neighbors Ontonagon 8-6.
Sunday morning Ironwood made it to semi-finals going up against Copper Country, but was out-scored 6-1.  Ironwood only has eight men on their roster, while Copper Country has a thirteen man squad. It doesn’t take much imagination to figure out what ten extra fresh legs mean in the sport of hockey. The Polar Bear did a great job getting to the semi-final event.
