Wisconsin Assembly Cracks Down On Indian Logos

WISCONSIN - Wisconsin lawmakers are considering cracking down on public school districts that continue to feature Native American logos for their sports teams and mascots.
Last week the State Assembly passed a bill that could change that.
It would allow a resident of the district to file a complaint on the grounds that the mascot promotes discrimination.
If the state school superintendent finds the name discriminatory, the school would have to drop the logo and could face fines.
36 high schools still use Indian names including the Gale-Ettick-Trempealeau Redmen.

G-E-T High School Principal Chuck Forster says it has been the subject of debate for years.

He says in the past the school has received complaints through emails, letters or phone calls.

Forster says he's also heard from those who grew up in the community and say the mascot is part of school tradition.
The principal says if they would have to retire their current school mascot, the school would ask for community and student input to help pick a new mascot.

The state Senate still must pass the bill before the Governor can sign it into law.
