G.C.C. Hosts Quiz Bowl

Ironwood November 2, 2009

The Wiz Kids from the local school districts once again gathered at Gogebic Community College Thursday to compete in the Fall Quiz Bowl. Two teams were missing from this year’s competition due to the H1 bug. Ontonagon and Watersmeet were unable to attend.

The Varsity Division had four local teams in the competition. The JV Division was a different matter. Bessemer and Iron wood both brought two JV teams . E-TC and Hurley W/M each brought one team, obviously creating an odd number of teams. An eighth team was formed from extra players from the other teams. This team was referred to as the Hybrid team.

Once again the Ironwood Red Devils won the Varsity trophy. The Red Devils had to defeat the Hurley Midgets twice to take home the trophy. The two teams met in Round 3 just before the lunch recess. It was a close game with the score 220-195. The afternoon game would not be quite that close. The final matchup saw Ironwood out score Hurley 135-205. Not that it had anything to do with the outcome Hurley for the second year in a row sent an all girl team to the Cerebral Bowl. They did very, very well.

The Red Devils were coached once again by Steve Boyd. Steve prepares his wiz kids extremely well for these competitions. Perhaps the reason why the Red Devils won both their regional matchups last year and appeared in the Championship U.P. High School Bowl on Channel 13.

The Hurley Midgets (Midgettes?) Were coached by first year coach Robert Genisot.
John Lupino has retired from coaching the team,  he told us "it’s time for young blood." John did an outstanding job coaching the Hurley Quiz Bowl Teams. His Hurley team won the UP Championship Game in 2003.

The Bessemer JV Quiz Bowl Team won the trophy in their division. The Speedboys/Speedgirls had to defeat their fellow classmates the Bessemer II team to take home the gold. The Bessemer JV team like the Ironwood Varity team went undefeated in the day long competition.

The Bessemer teams is coached by Steve Rowe who also masters the techniques of winning these competition.

Pictured above on the far right is Carl Vaara who produces these Wiz Kid Competitions. Carl is always working to make things work better and in keeping with the WMNU TV U.P. Wide championship series.

This year Carl threw in a new rule for the kids that was intended to slow down the aggressive Ironwood team. Obviously it didn’t work, nor should it have. Ironwood didn’t go to last year’s championship game just because they’re quick on the buzzer!
