The Range Gogebic Concert Band and the Concert in
the Park Choir presented a concert Thursday evening as part of
Wakefield's "Old Fashion 4th of July" celebration. The music
performed by both groups was in keeping with the tradition of the
holiday and this year's theme "Freedom Isn't Free". The concert
served as a prelude to the fantastic fireworks display that began at
dusk.
The program began with the presentation of our
country's Colors. The Honor Guard was made up by members of the
Wakefield American Legion and the Wakefield V.F.W. The Honr Guard
was led by John "Chummy" Ozzello.
The Concert in the Park Choir began the evenings
entertainment following the Pledge of Allegiance and the National
Anthem.
The first song was a medley of military anthems: the
Army, The Navy, The Marine Corps, The Coast Guard and the Air Force.
As each anthem was sung, members in the audience who serve or have
served in that branch of service, were asked to stand. Armed service
members were also standing outside the pavilion where a large
audience had gathered.
Other patriotic songs followed, including
the Battle Hymn of the Republic and America the Beautiful. Then the
choir, led by Judy Levra, would perform a sing along with the
audience. The songs included: "Sentimental Journey", "Let Me
Call You Sweetheart", "I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover"
and "Side By Side".
The choir was accompanied by Organist Nancy Bertetto, who also
did double duty as a choir singer..Well done Nancy!
The audience was then treated to a wonderful, solo performance by
Allyson Maki. Allyson sang "Proud to be an American". There was
barely a dry eye in the audience during and following this song.
The choir then performed their final song of the evening "God
Bless America"
The Gogebic Range Concert Band, under the
directorship of Larry Gabka, then took center stage. This was the
band's third and best performance of the season. They did an
absolutely great job Thursday night and was well received by the
very large audience that came to hear them play. And play they did.
A rousing Fourth of July Program in the truest of tradition.

The band performed the traditional "1812 Overture" (Tchaikovsky).
The usual cannon fire was replaced by the local Rifle Squad". A
little quieter but just as effective. Besides, who has a spare
cannon or two? The band went on to play favorite Sousa Marches and
of course the "Star Spangled Spectacular" by Mr. Fourth of July,
George M. Cohan. The concert kept the audience in their seats until
the very last song of the evening "God Bless America" . The GRCB
closes each of their concerts with this America's "Unofficial
National Anthem".
