Finlandia University International School of Art & Design
Annual Juried Student Exhibition

HANCOCK - The second half of Thursday’s cultural activities occurred at Finlandia University’s Gallery, which is located in the Finnish-American Heritage Center in Hancock.
An exhibit of juried student artwork is now featured at the Finlandia University Gallery and is open to the public through April 21, 2010.

The evening began with a reception for the artists, followed by a fashion show produced by the design students and concluded with an awards ceremony. The exhibit is the culmination of over 175 exhibits created by the Finlandia Art and Design students.
This year’s show was the largest exhibit by far, it included 74 exhibits nearly double the number of exhibits in last year’s show.

“The annual juried exhibit showcases the growing talent of Finlandia art and design students, and provides an opportunity for community members to purchase student artwork,” notes Carrie Flaspohler, director of the Finlandia University Gallery.

Slide Show

“Every year I look forward to listening to the wonderful discussions about ideas and aesthetics that take place during the jury process,” says Flaspohler, “I am always inspired by the thought, ideals, and just plain hard work that are clearly invested in these student pieces.”

The exhibition includes works by International School of Art and Design students studying drawing, painting, illustration, photography, ceramic and glass design, fiber and fashion design, sculpture, product and interior design, graphic design, digital media, and mixed media/installation.

The works were judged by three jurors; a member of the Faculty, a graduating senior and a member of the community. This year’s jurors were:  Phyllis Fredendall, Associate Professor at Finlandia University’s School of Art and Design, D.C Wilson a Finlandia graduating art and design senior, and a community sculptor Tom Rudd.

The Finlandia University Gallery is in the Finnish American Heritage Center, Hancock. The Finlandia University International School of Art & Design Annual Juried Student Exhibition will be on display April 1 through April 20, 2010. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or by appointment. Please call 906-487-7500 for more information.
