Hurley Students Complete Memorial Planting

Hurley School students and Wisconsin Master Gardeners combined forces two times yesterday to continue their 2010 gardening projects.

At noon, the students from Mrs. Olkanen’s fourth grade class planted flowers at the Iron County Courthouse. One group of young gardeners planted in the raised planter at the flag pole. The second group of fourth graders planted out near the road in front of the Viet Nam War Memorial.
Maggie Callaham, Summer Horticulture & Youth Assistant, Iron County UW-Extension
explained to the kids the significance of the Memorial. After the planting had been completed, they stood and listened as Maggie and Wisconsin Master Gardener Diane Fontecchio read the names inscribed on the memorial plaque on the wall. The students then placed American Flags in the plantings.

Later in the afternoon, the after school students planted five flower pots to be placed in front of the school. The students are participants in Carol Saari’s afternoon program.

After completing the large flower pots, the students and Master Gardeners moved to the sign at the front of the school entrance. The area is already planted with shrubs and a few perennials. The kids planted the remaining annual flowers and mulched the planting bed. The annuals will provide summer long color to the school entrance.

This nearly finalizes the Iron County plant projects. Tomorrow, the Master gardeners begin their projects in Gogebic County. On the agenda for the next ten days are the Grandview Project, Bessemer School and Sophie Street projects, as well as the Norrie School Project which moves from the classroom to Norrie Park. This will in all likelihood be the last year for Norrie Students to do their very large community project.

In addition to Maggie Callaham and Diane Fontecchio, other Wisconsin Master Gardeners working on Thursday’s projects were: Pat Severin, Jewel Lakvold, Vic Calore, Zona Wick and Lou Bonagura.
