President James Lorenson took the Board Members on a
tour of the buildings focusing on the physical changes that have
been made to the buildings this year.
The first stop was the automotive classroom where Kenneth
Trzaska, Dean of Instruction described the sprucing up to the
facility and some of the changes still to come.
Much of the old equipment had been auctioned off earlier this
summer. The Shop was cleaned and painted. New equipment will be
acquired as funds become available.
The Board members were introduced to two new Adjunct
Instructors who will be working with the automotive students
beginning this semester they are Eric Lytwyniuk and Steve Jones.
Both individuals own professional automotive facilities and have
joined the GCC staff to help direct the program into new and
innovated areas of technology.
There are plans to move the programs forward with new
concepts, equipment and programs, including a alternate fuel
program (diesel), a nine credit course. GCC students have the
opportunity to choose between a certificate program or the
Associate of Applied Technology degree program.

The group then visited the Lindquist Center and viewed the
renovations to the pool that were completed during the summer
break. One item clearly visible is the automated pool cover that
was installed for energy conservation purposes. |

At last evenings meeting the Board also approved the bid for the purchase of 39 new
computers from Insight. Thirty of the computers will be used on the
Ironwood campus and nine will be placed in the Houghton classroom
area.
Ruotsala Concrete of Ironwood was awarded the bid to reconstruct
the upper parking lot on campus on Greenbush Street.
A bid to replace the exterior locks on the automotive bay in the
Technical Building and two panic crash bars on internal doors in
Campus Suites was awarded to Stanley Security Solutions of Waukesha,
WI.

the new furnishings (work stations) and computers. The equipment
was provided through funding provided by the GCC Foundation. The

The Board approved entering into a lease with Kassbohrer All
Terrain Vehicles, Inc. to obtain a Piston Bully snow cat for use at
Mt. Zion by the Ski Area Management Program. The machine that the
college will obtain will provide the SAM (Ski Area Management) students the opportunity to
work with the most innovative and cutting edge equipment in the ski
industry. It is one of the machines that debuted at last year’s
Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia. It is also just one
of six such machines in the Midwest. |

Everything on the groomer is either electrical or hydraulic,
including the steering. Everything operates by way of five onboard
computers. It is exactly what every guy in the U.P. would love to
have in their garage!
