Bessemer - Having been appointed as Sheriff of Gogebic County, Pete
Matonich resigned from the Bessemer City Council. At the Bessemer
Council meeting last night, the Mayor and Council members accepted
with regret Pete’s resignation. As required by the law, Matonich officially resigned last week prior to being sworn in as County Sheriff. In his letter to the Mayor and Council Members, Matonich stated “It has been an honor to have served our community over the last 11 years. Often very challenging, I feel my experiences will be a tremendous asset to me as I move forward in my career and onto a new chapter in my life. Working with you and our dedicated staff and employees has been a pleasure. I hope to continue our relationship into the future as I move into my new position.” Concluding his letter Matonich went on to say “Bessemer and our

Last night was an appropriate night for the new Sheriff to attend the Council meeting, where much of the time was focused on vandalism. |
As in neighboring areas, vandalism is a growing concern. In Bessemer the Bluff View Park is experiencing a surge in crime some more serious than vandalism. The City Council agreed to review and revise the City’s Curfew Law, making it more definitive and effective when dealing with the community’s youth. The proposed revisions will closely resemble Wakefield’s law and will be reviewed by the Officers in the Sheriff’s Department. The City manager was asked to investigate the State’s Curfew law and report his findings to the council. In another motion, the Council voted to take a bite out-of-crime, approving the purchase of surveillance cameras and equipment for the park, however, the Council did not take any action on a closing time for the park.
