County Commission Protests Third Party Licensing

BESSEMER - The County Board of Commissioners met yesterday for the first of two scheduled September meetings.

The Board Members approved the write off of Personal Property Taxes deemed uncollectible. The total amount due for the county’s political subdivisions totaled just over $164,000. The taxes were associated with tax year 2004 and prior. The write off now goes before a judge for final approval.

The Board Members approved a Resolution regarding third party licensing. According to the Commission, there is no one locally to do licensing for driving tests. Persons wishing to be tested for a driver license must wait until a third party, Showlander from Iron Mountain comes to Bessemer to give the test. Showlander will not make the trip to Gogebic unless there are five applicants ready for testing.

The following resolution was unanimously approved by the Gogebic Commissioners and will be sent to the Governor and other State Officials.

GOGEBIC COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS RESOLUTION 2010-09
Third Party License Testing

Whereas, the Michigan Secretary of State Office no longer administers the driver licensing tests for motorists of all types and classes;

Whereas, these driver tests are now administered by a third party;

Whereas, these tests for Gogebic and Ontonagon Counties are administered by a company out of Iron County Michigan, Showlander consulting;
Whereas, Gogebic must have at least five potential drivers to be tested before a date will be scheduled by the Sholander consulting;

Whereas, it appears that Sholander consulting has a monopoly on the third party testing:

Whereas, the State Bureau of Regulatory Services overseas this third party testing;
Now therefore be it resolved; that the Gogebic County Board of Commissioners is asking that the State to allow Gogebic County to provide our own third party testers.

Be it further resolved; that this resolution is sent to the Governor, the State Bureau of Regulatory Services and our State Legislators.

Thomas F Gerovac, Chairman
Gerry R Pelissero, Clerk

The Board of Commissions also approved the hiring of Sheriff’s Deputy, a position that had become vacant when Pete Matonich became Gogebic County Sheriff last week.
