HANCOCK – September 11, 2010
The Carole Harris art exhibit at the Finlandia University
Gallery closes today. The month long art exhibit
“Improvisations” opened on August 12th. Thursday
evening there was a reception for the Detroit based Fiber
Artist.
Harris formed her own interior design business , Harris
Design Group. Since 1976 HDG has specialized in commercial
interior design, serving many institutions and organizations
in Southeastern Michigan. Carole Harris is also a fantastic
fiber artist exhibiting her art quilts in galleries and
museums internationally.
Harris’s exhibit, “Improvisations,” is a collection of
colorful, complex handmade quilts.
The dense layering of patterns and the repetition of
materials that Harris employs in her non-traditional quilts
and tapestries are evocative of the rhythms, energy, and
movement found in African and African-American music,
particularly Blues and Jazz.
“I try to think of my work as the visualization of the
music that inspires me,” notes Harris.
There is always a wonderful art exhibit to be found at the
Finlandia Gallery. However, sometimes the work exhibited is
amazing and Harris’ work is simply “Fantastic”.
They say that the camera never lies, well that certainly is
an untrue statement, as cameras often fail to measure up to
the person or thing being photographed. The photos in this
article definitely fail to deliver the punch that the art
work does.
When we walked into Harris exhibit, you get the same “Wow”
feeling that we got when visiting the Bruce Neimi exhibit.
These are not your grandmother’s quilts, the designs are
terrific and the colors are simply fantastic.
On our first trip to photograph the exhibit we stayed long
beyond the completion of our work. We reviewed the art work
and reshot the subjects hoping to do it justice.
Today is your last chance to visit the exhibit
