BERGLAND – The G.O.I.S.D. held its September meeting last night at
its offices in Bergland.
Two new employees were introduced to the members by Superintendent
Bruce Mayle. Kim Kangas is the new Executive Secretary, and will be
working for the Superintendent. . She is new to the U.P. moving here
from Las Vegas. Her Husband is a Boomerang Yooper, also moving here
from L.V.
James Oliver attended his first Board meeting as the GOISD Business
Manager. Jim is a CPA and resides in Ironwood; he also serves as a
County Commissioner on the Gogebic County Commission.
The Bid Specifications for the building roof repair were not
received in time for last evenings meeting. The specs are being
prepared by OHM Engineering Advisors, a Houghton based engineering
company.
Jim Oliver prepared the financial statements for the evening
including the payables that were approved by the Board. Jim has been
spending much his time this month getting acquainted with the
software and accounting systems and getting the G.O.I.S.D. payroll
out on time.
The Board members voted to charge off uncollectable Personal
Property Taxes. The County Commission and local units of government
are also charging off these uncollectable taxes dating back prior to
2004.
Shawn Kolbus, Director of Career and Technical Education, advised
the Board that the 2010 School year has been busy, but going very
well. The new Health Careers program has 25 students. The class is
being taught live in Bessemer and by video recording in Ironwood and
Ontonagon.
Enough students have enrolled in the accounting program and business
support classes in Ewen- Trout Creek and that program is also going
well.
Kolbus told the Board that he is very happy with the new welding
instructor and the new aide hired for the OASD Vocational Program. |
