Finnish Activities coming soon to Finlandia’s Heritage Center

(Fall enrichment classes and special programs. Unless otherwise states all events are free and open to the public.)

Kukkeli kuu - Tuesdays (beginning Sep 28)–– with Sherry Saarinen – $30 per family. Saarinen will lead Kukkeli kuu for elementary students from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. Geared toward early elementary school-aged children, Saarinen will teach students basic Finnish words and phrases for story-telling and activities. Each class will meet for 10 weeks, and registration will cost only $30 per family. For more information, call 487-7505.

Advanced Finnish – Tuesdays - 6:30 p.m. - beginning Sep 28 (for 20 weeks - $100) - with Hannu Leppänen - $100.00 - This class is open to students who have studied at this level under him before, and new students with enough Finnish language background can surely join right in. Intermediate Finnish - Wednesdays - 6:30 p.m. – begins Sep 29 (for 20 weeks - $100) – with Anna Leppänen - Open to students with some prior knowledge of the Finnish language. To register, call 487-7505.

Exhibit - People, Place and Time: Michigan’s Copper Country through the Lens of J.W. Nara - 28 Sep – 7 Dec. Free and open to the public Mondays through Friday.

Nordic Film Series presents “Letters to Father Jacob” - Oct 14 – 2 pm & 6 pm – This touching film finds pardoned convict Leila agreeing to work as an assistant to Father Jacob, an aged, blind pastor in a forgotten little parish. Together they discover the meaning of their lives. In Finnish with English subtitles.

Book signing Lillian Lehto – “A Rascal’s Craft” - (translations of Eelu Kiviranta’s poem) – 14 Oct - 4 p.m. -5 p.m. - at North Wind Books.

Jamming with kanteles - Every Monday of November –– 7 pm – free to public; all levels accepted – some 5- and 10-kantele available. Anything that can jam with kanteles is also welcome. (Nov 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29) For more information, call Kay at 523-6271

A lecture and slide presentation by Dr. Arne Alanen, Finlandia Foundation Lecturer of the Year - 4 Nov - 7:00 p.m. – Jointly hosted by Suomi Kerho and the Finnish Theme Committee of Hancock. Free to the public; refreshments to follow program.

“The Bread of Niskavuori” – Finlandia University theater production – 11-13 Nov -7:30 p.m. and 14 Nov matinee - 2:30 p.m.

Nordic Films Series presents “One Foot Under” (Toinen jalka haudasta) – a Finnish film of love, irony and a bit of comedy (Finnish, with English subtitles) - 18 Nov – 2 p.m. & 6 p.m.

Nordic Films Series presents “Christmas Story” (Joulutarina) - 9 Dec - 2 pm & 6 pm - It is the story of how an orphan called Nikolas became Santa Claus. Finnish films dubbed into English.
