Hurley Has a Happy Home Coming

HURLEY - There was no doubt that it was Home Coming Day in Hurley. The school was a buzz with excitement and the day was filled with high energy activity.

The Home Coming Pep Rally began in the early afternoon and continued until the afternoon Home Coming Parade down Silver Street. Many supporters showed up for the seven minute event as they all came to cheer on the Midgets for what they hoped would be another victory.

Hurley (4-1) would take on the Vikings from Baraga (4-1) . The game would be followed by a dance back at the school.

Slide Show

When I arrived at the Hurley Gym to watch this year’s home coming I was really surprised to find one half of the gymnasium was filed with little Midgets. What appeared to be the entire elementary school populous was there; and were they there! They were ready and willing to support their team as much as their older counterparts.

Faces painted, Pom Poms shaking (do they still call them Pom Poms?) Cheering, stomping their feet and filling the room with an energy all their own.

It became evident early on that while the purpose of the event was to show support to the football team, the rally really was to support all the students.

Players from several teams were introduced to the audience including the little boys and girls that have been playing Saturday Football. That FOOTBALL not football. Also acknowledge were the Kids playing Pop Warner Football, the Junior High players, the J.V and of course the Varsity Squad.

There were many games and other entertainment for the crowd and participants to enjoy.
The big moment came at the end of the Pep Rally and that of course was the Coronation of this year’s Home Coming King and Queen. A crowning moment so to speak!

This year the Home Coming King and Queen were Jeff Aspinwall and Alyssa Kutz . The Runner up for King was Jesse Vokolek and the Runner Up for Queen was Jeanna Aijala. The remaining Court members were: Ty Patritto, Carli Anderson, Jake Rowe, Justin Rhenlund, Laura Maslanka, Jessalyn Barker, Connor Huotari and Alina Krone.
Following the Rally, there was the Home coming Parade down Silver Street. The parade included floats for each H. S. Class, Dan Mykkanen and the Hurley Marching Band, the Hurley Fire Department, the Hurley Police and the Iron County Sherriff.

After all that preceded it how could anyone doubt the outcome of the game against the Baraga Vikings. The game between two 4 and 1 teams would start off as a nail biter, but not for long. The Midgets scored their first touchdown just 58 seconds into the game. But, Baraga would come right back to take the lead. The Vikings played good defense and kept the Midgets at bay for a while. Soon Midget Coach Scott Erickson would dissect the Viking play calling and soon the Midgets would dissect the Vikes on the field. The Midgets would score twice more in the second quarter to lead 19-6 at the half.

In the third quarter Hurley would widen their lead to 27-6 and then would ice the cake with another TD in the fourth quarter.

The final score was 34-6 Hurley over Baraga.

The Midgets made 18 first downs to the Vikings 6 first downs. Baraga had 3 penalties for 17 yards and the Midgets had 7 penalties for 60 yards. There were three turnovers for the Vikings and Hurley turned the ball over twice on fumbles.

Next week Baraga goes on to play Forest Park and Hurley goes to Washburn.
