Bessemer Extends Manager's Contract
The Bessemer City council voted 4-1 last night to renew the city contract with Manager Thomas Chatel. Marlene Zaleski cast the only vote opposing Chatel’s contract renewal.

Prior to the motion to renew the contract Councilman Al Gaiss, pictured above, spoke to issue stating that he was satisfied with Chatel’s job performance. Gaiss went on to say that he would make a motion to renew the contract for just one year and that it be the Chattel’s final contract.

After much discussion regarding salary and benefits it was the consensus that Chatel was working on three projects that he should continue working on. Zaleski stated that was the same reason Chatel’s contract was renewed the last time around and that he also would be working on projects the next time his contract came up.

When time came to vote on the issue, Gaiss backed of his intention  to make the motion limit Chatel to one final year. The motion was made and supported and Gaiss voted to renew the contract for one more year.
