Norrie School Deal Wins Favor of IASD Board
The Ironwood School Board held a Special Meeting Monday evening that focused on the disposal of the Norrie School. Scheduled to be closed during Christmas break, the district trustees want to dispose of the school building. Not wanting to repeat their sins in the past, ala Newport School, the school board will demolish Norrie unless a suitable buyer is found.

The district has been approached by Chris Forslund, with an offer to purchase the school for $100. While that sounds like a hundred dollars, think again. In new math, that translates into $220,100. Today we measure success in both profit and cash flow. And it is because of the cash flow that Forslund’s offer will surely receive the support of the district, the city and the populous. Should Forslund’s plan be derailed the School District will spend $220,000 to demolish the school building. By accepting the Forslund deal, the school district will have the extra 220,000 to invest in other capital improvements within the school district.

The district is $1.5 million under budget on the LLW renovation. Steve Thomas would like to use that money plus the Norrie School savings on items that will help the district for the long haul.

At the meeting were approximately 40 interested citizens, a few teachers and representatives from the Daily Globe and IronwoodInfo.

Of those in attendance only one person spoke in opposition to the project, and that was Jim Beckman, who lives next to the school. Beckman, was given ample opportunity to question Chris Forslund and to point out why he is opposed to the project.

While I’m not always on the same page as Steve Thomas, I have to report he did a terrific job in handling the meeting. Everyone had more than a fair chance to voice their opinions and to ask questions.

One or two people asked questions voicing their concerns, but did not necessarily oppose the project.

Dave Martin who manages Roy Ahonen real estate holdings voiced his concern about losing the senior citizens are now renting at his properties.
The project that will include 9 senior villas and 18 apartments, appeared to have the support of the vast majority of those attending the meeting.

In other business, the district made additional staff hiring’s, Sherry Quigley as Part-Time After-School Program Teacher, and Thomas Mott as Jr. Varsity Boys Basketball Coach.
