Range Master Gardener Volunteers Receive $1000 Grant from Xcel Energy
HURLEY - Mike BeBeau, Xcel Energy’s Community Service Manager out of the Ashland, WI office, presents the Range Master Gardener Volunteers, Lynn Adams, treas., Zona Wick and Vic Calore, V. Pres. , a $1000 check. The check was signed over to Zona Wick, Iron County Health Officer, who is in charge the new Iron County Community Garden in Hurley, WI. The monies will be used for a much needed garden shed. The garden was started this spring by Toni Rogers and Zona Wick who secured a $5000.00 grant through the 2010 Iron County Employee Wellness Program.

The Range Master Gardeners Association donated $1000.00 toward the new raised cedar beds and the 46th Parallel Planters Gardening Club also donated $400.00, so a roto tiller could be purchased along with one cedar bed.

There are now 20 raised cedar beds in the garden and an “Herb Star” garden. A class was taught on “How to Use Fresh Herbs In Place of Salt.” Special emphasis will be placed on assisting low-income, youth, young families and senior citizens in raising vegetables that will be used to feed their families in Iron County, WI. Several additional plots will be planted and the fresh vegetables will be donated to local food pantries and several raised beds will be made available to people with disabilities.

Zona Wick stated, “A community garden brings people together and promotes a healthy and active lifestyle.” If any person or organization would like to donate monetary funds or time to this new Iron County Community Garden, please call Zona Wick at 561-2191.
