Kangas Recipient of 2010 Chip Chiantello Public Service Award
BESSEMER - At last evening’s Gogebic County Commission meeting it was announced that Gogebic County Commissioner Leroy Kangas has been named the recipient of the 2010 Chip Chiantello Public Service Award.

The Public Service Award is named after the late Oreste “Chip” Chiantello, who served on the Gogebic County Board and several other community and governmental positions.

Each county board in the six-county western U.P. nominates its selection. This year Kangas was nominated by both Gogebic and Ontonagon Counties.

The 2009 award recipient was Jim Saari of Gogebic County. The award is sponsored by the Western U.P. Planning and Development Region (WUPPDR) and Michigan Works.

County Sheriff Matonich made an appearance at the Commission Meeting for the purpose of introducing the newly hired Deputy Josh Elais. Josh has been working at LV Watersmeet for three years and he is currently “Road Certified”.

Matonich also advised the Commissioners of other staff changes being made, including the December 1st, retirement of Under Sheriff Bob Halvorson.
