There was a real gathering of brain power at Gogebic Community
College yesterday.
Quiz Bowl students from the areas school district gathered once
again to do Cerebral Battle at the College. In the fall schools
from the Gogebic Ontonagon Intermediate School Districts, plus
the Hurley School come to GCC for the local Quiz Bowl competition. Next Spring the same
teams will be joined by teams from the Copper Country ISD for an
all out war of IQs.
Only one school failed to make it to this fall’s event,
Wakefield-Marenisco. We were told that the School had closed due
to power outages in Marenisco.
However, the remaining schools brought along enough teams as
to make-up the shortage created by W-M decision not to compete.
On the flip side, Ontonagon and Watersmeet both missing at
last year’s meet, were able to send teams this fall.

It turned out to be a good trip for the Gladiators, whose J.V.
Wiz Kids took home first prize in the J.V. Division. Coach
Simi’s Varsity team came out of the bus really strong for their
opening match. The Varsity Gladiators were coming off a
tremendous showing on Channel 13’s High School Bowl Tournament
and look as if they can GO-ALLLLL-THE-WAY! |

Today’s event would see Bessemer’s Wiz Kids take home the
trophy as the winning Varsity team. The final varsity match of
the day was between the Speedboys and the Re Devils. Dave Rowe
and Steve Boyd always have their teams ready for the battlefield
of IQs. This is a rebuilding year for both coaches and Ironwood
has opted to go with an all sophomore team.
Making this great event possible were: Carl Vaara, Quiz Bowl
Organizer and all the quiz bowl readers: Jeane Graham, Kim
Zeckvitch, Larry Hopkins, Don Pelkola, Patti John Kit Malloy,
and John Sokol.
