Northern Initiative Readies Visitor Survey

In September Chris Rector , Director Regional Strategies for Northern Initiatives and a marketing team visited Gogebic and Ontonagon Counties on a field trip to visit some of our area's attractions. The field trip was to help the team that is working on developing a tourism campaign for our area. The campaign is in partnership with our state tourism agency, Travel Michigan.

Rector, came to Gogebic and Ontonagon to meet with members of the local business communities, government representatives and members of the Ottawa Forest Service.

The focus of the meetings held at Black River Harbor Pavilion and the Folk School at Porcupine Mountain State Park was to seek information for the upcoming cooperative advertising campaign.

Northern Initiatives is gathering information from a visitor survey being completed by local businesses. Rector expects to have a report of the findings available to members of the working group by the end of the month.

Rector stated “We are also preparing to launch our "small business" survey. Tourism is the most significant industry in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, yet very little is known about the recent experiences and future expectations of our many businesses serving tourists. “

We are also preparing to launch our "small business" survey. Tourism is the most significant industry in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, yet very little is known about the recent experiences and future expectations of our many businesses serving tourists.

We would like to survey marketing and support organization for the Upper Peninsula tourism industry, to better understand:
How is business?
What are your expectations for the future?
Where are your customers coming from?
How can we market the Upper Peninsula most effectively?

The survey will provide a baseline of industry trends and also offer critical information for communities to develop strategies to support tourism and small business growth and development. The results will be shared with community leaders from throughout the two county region.
