Milbrath and Irwin Named Michigan Tech Student-Athletes of the Month

Senior football player Phil Milbrath and freshman cross country runner Deedra Irwin were named Michigan Tech Student-Athletes of the Month for October. The award is sponsored by the Michigan Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).

Milbrath rushed for 894 yards and seven touchdowns in five games during the month of October. He also had 214 yards and four touchdowns receiving during the stretch. He posted a 250-yard, five-touchdown game vs. Northwood on Oct. 23 and followed that up with a 293-yard, two-score game in a 20-17 win over No. 1-ranked Grand Valley State. The 5-9, 200-pound senior was named GLIAC and National Offensive Player of the Week following the GVSU game.

Irwin finished a team-best seventh at the UW-Parkside Invitational, covering the five-kilometer course in 19:10. She followed up with her third win of the season at the UP Cross Country Championships, finishing the six-kilometer course in 23:10.

Irwin was also the September student-athlete of the month after posting a pair of wins at the Upper Peninsula Opener and Lake Superior Challenge. She also finished a team-best 18th at the Roy Griak Invitational.

Fellow senior cross country runner Brian Stetter was the male student-athlete of the month for September. He picked up wins at the Upper Peninsula Opener and Lake Superior Challenge before finishing a team best 16th at the Roy Griak Invitational.

The SAAC will select student-athletes of the month all year.
