by Wes Frahm, director of athletic communications and marketing
Coach Kevin Luke has announced the signing of Phil Romback (Seymour, Wis.) and Ben Stelzer (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) to national letters of intent to attend and play basketball at Tech. "These two recruits are great examples of the type of student-athletes we’re looking for," said Luke. "They’re both strong academically and will fit very well into our systems on the basketball court as well. We’re very happy to have them in our program." Romback, a 6-7 forward, averaged 16.6 points and 7.8 rebounds while shooting 58 percent from the field and 48 percent from 3-point range for Seymour High School last year as a junior. He is the No. 9-ranked player in the state of Wisconsin, according to WisSports.net. He earned first-team All-Bay Conference each of the past two seasons, while helping the Thunder to 20 wins each year. He was a Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division 2 All-State pick a year ago. "Romback is a very skilled forward," said Luke. "He is a very good 3-point shooter and can also play with his back to the basket. He will cause matchup problems for opponents because of his versatility." Stelzer, a 6-1 combination guard, has averaged more than 20 points per game each of the past two seasons at Roncalli High School, including 22.7 a year ago. He was a WBCA Division 3 All-State First Team selection and the Olympian Conference Player of the Year last season. Stelzer, who is the No. 12-ranked Wisconsin prep player by WisSports.net, helped the Jets to a state tournament final-four appearance in 2009 and conference titles in 2009 and 2010. "Stelzer is one of the toughest guards we’ve recruited," said Luke. "He’s an exceptional 3-point shooter and possesses a great basketball IQ and relentless work ethic." Both student-athletes will play their senior seasons in 2010-11 and join the Huskies next fall. |
