Garfield R. "Skip" Drake, III, Memorial Nursing Scholarship established at GCC

A new scholarship has been established at Gogebic Community College in memory of Garfield R. "Skip" Drake, III. According to Skip's family, he always had a love of nursing that started when he worked with the Disabled Vets Program. "He would be glad to know that now he is helping others who want to pursue a career in the nursing field," said his mother, Cleo Mary Drake.

Skip attended Ironwood schools, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1967. He then attended Gogebic Community College for 1 ½ years.

A dedicated veteran, Skip was a life member and past commander of Ironwood American Legion Post 5, and served in the Post 5 Honor Guard, a life member of Ironwood Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1823, and life member and past commander of Northland Chapter No. 66, Disabled American Veterans.

He loved hunting and fishing. One of his favorite pastimes was playing cards with friends and family - some of his favorite games were cribbage, smear, poker and blackjack.

The endowed scholarship will be awarded each year to a full-time or part-time student in the nursing program or the Nurse Aid Training Program.

"We wanted to establish this scholarship at Gogebic so that Skip's memory could live on," said Cleo Mary Drake. "Now he can help those that are interested in helping others."
