Racing to New Years

January 1, 2011

The Pro Vintage Snowmobile Races began Friday afternoon at the Gogebic County Fairgrounds. However, the official start of the Big Race weekend began Friday night when snowmobile racers joined by other snowmobile riders, participated in a race parade.

The parade route was redirected as a result of the thaw and lack of snow on the streets. The parade goers and viewers gathered at the Downtown Depot and rode their parade entries down da' trail to Hurley, where the parade concluded at the Iron Horse Trail Head.

The opening ceremonies began with the singing of the National Anthem, sung by Legionaire Bob Canon. Accompanying Canon was a Color Guard made up of local members of the American Legion.

The event featured the lighting of the Paavo Nurmi Marathon torch; lighted by Hurley Mayor Joe Pinardi.

The early New Year’s Eve celebration concluded with a great fireworks display provided by Mike Fontecchio of Spider’s in Hurley and volunteers from the Hurley Fire Department.
