The Polar Bear Squirts went to L'Anse this past weekend to
compete in the district playdowns. The playdowns determine what
teams will advance to the District Finals. As a result of the
weekend play the Squirts are now 19 and 0 for the season and
Matt Clemens the Squirt's Goalie now has nine shutouts to his
credit.
The polar Bears advanced this weekend to the U.P. District
finals February 18-20 in Houghton Michigan. The polar bears
defeated all four teams, Iron Mountain 9-6, Calumet 8-7, Iron
River 7-1, and K-bay 10-0. In net for the polar bears Matthew
Clemens took all four wins with 1 shutout. Goals were scored by
Tyler Morrison (12), Caleb Baxter (8), Nathan Garnell (5), Ethan
Roehm (3), C.J. Sorensen (2), Hanna Koivisto, Sydnee Lorenson,
Tommy Lundin, and Brett Heil each with 1 goal. Assists were
tallied by Roehm (10), Garnell (6), Morrison and Baxter each
with (5), Heil (4), David Collins and Lundin each with (3),
Sorensen with 1 assist. "The team has a lot of character, they
never quit and play harder when they are behind. They did a very
good job this weekend." Said coach Scott Kellett.
In their last game Sunday the Squirts routed their opponents,
K-Bay. It was evident from the drop of the first puck how this
game would go. The Squirts scored their first goal within
seconds of the start of the game. Within three minutes the
Squirts had scored three points. At the end of the first period
the score was seven zip.
