HANCOCK - February 8, 2011 Finnish curler and
politician Markku Uusipaavalniemi (pictured above) would
be proud. Finlandia has formed a Curling Club.
Yes. The Finlandia Curling Club has officially been
recognized, and within its first six days the roar of
curling rocks has already made us proud.
Finlandia Curling entered the Midwest College Curling
Championships in January and managed to take home a
bronze medal!
It was a rough start in the playdown (tournament) as
Finlandia lost its first match against MTU, 0-12.
Finlandia scored its first few points in the next match
to break the ice. Then, they proceeded to improve
throughout the playdown and eventually managed to beat
the odds when it counted most.
The bronze medal match came down to a rematch between
Finlandia and MTU. This time, Finlandia was ready with
rock and brooms in hand to sweep their way to a 9-3
victory.
Yes, congratulations go out to all our outstanding
curlers in the Championship. Congratulations to: Dave
Hendrickson – Skip, Matt Erickson, Nate Kennaday, India
Slayback, Justin Cayce, Jake Weston, and George Kallas.
(Nicole Pollack of Carroll University also stepped in as
a sub for a game.)
Thank you, also, to all those who came to watch a few
sheets!
The Finlandia Curling Club is open to any students
who wish to participate. We welcome beginners as much as
advanced curlers. Come, learn to curl…you‘ll love it!
The next Curling Club meeting is Tuesday, February 8,
8:00 p.m., in the Finlandia Hall cafeteria.
The next challenge is the National Curling
Championships, March 11 to 13, in Chicago.
