Washington School: Saving the planet one seed at a time

BESSEMER - April 2, 2011

Each spring members of the Range Master Gardeners provide seed planting instruction to the Washington School fourth grade students. This week, five Master Gardens visited students in Mrs. Carver’s and Mrs. Osiers classes.

Master Garden Gordon Frase teaches each class the fundamentals of seed starting. The students learn about plant structure, growth requirements, sowing details as well as what to observe when reading the envelope that seed come in.

This year as in years past the students sowed marigold seeds. They will be able to care for the seeds using the information that they learned in their classroom instruction.

Just prior to school closing for summer recess, the kids will take their plants outdoors and will plant them around the school sign and along the the steps leading to the front door.

Assisting Frase in the classroom were Master Gardeners Jewell Lakvold, Chris Ainslie and Bonnie Maki.
