Ironwood
Students Participate In International Event
IRONWOOD - May 28, 2011
In 1997, the Partnership for a
Walkable America sponsored the first National Walk Our
Children to School Day in Chicago, modeled after the
United Kingdom’s lead. Back then, it was simply a day to
bring community leaders and children together to create
awareness of the need for communities to be walkable.
Last year, Ironwood students joined the movement.
Yesterday, the students from Luther L Wright and Sleight
School gathered in downtown Ironwood to participate in
Walk To School Day.
Students had an added incentive yesterday as Friday was
also “Silly Hat Day”. Many of the kids as well as many
adults present wore what were deemed to be silly hats.
Actually, they were more Kool than Silly. The kids
enjoyed both the strange apparel and the walk to school.
Prior to the walk the Jr. ROTC began the morning leading
the students in saying the “Pledge of Allegiance”. The
Jr. ROTC provided a color guard that leads the parade of
students to LLW.
On a beautiful spring
morning, LLW Jr.ROTC Cadets lead the parade of students
on a walk to Luther L Wright School.
Dylan, pictured above, said
that he purchased his hat in Wausau in 2007.

Ironwood’s Finest were on hand to assure a safe walk to
the schools. The Safety officers accompanied the
students until they arrive safely at Sleight and LLW.
In
2005, new legislation recognized the value of
Safe Routes to School
programs and is providing funding for States to
establish programs. Politicians and other government
officials are paying attention to the importance of safe
walking and biking to school. Obesity, concern for the
environment and the effects of urban sprawl on
communities has led to the joining of efforts among
those that care about these and other related issues
like school siting and traffic congestion.
