Firefighters from Ironwood and Hurley
fought a large fire at the Ottawa Forest Products
building today. Smoke from the building located in the
Industrial Park spread to US 2.
Ladder trucks from both Ironwood and Hurley were called
into service along with other firefighting equipment.
The quick response by the firefighters prevented the
fire from becoming a total conflagration.
Paramedics and two ambulances from Beacon Ambulance were
at the fire scene.
Although there were no reports of injury,
members of the Sherriff’s Department Victim Service Unit
were present bringing water and ice to firefighters as
the intense heat continued to emanate from the building
long after the 25 foot high flames had been extinguished
.
Units from the State Police, Sheriff’s Department and
the Hurley Police Department were on hand for traffic
control as the Ironwood Safety Department is undermanned
due to recent budget cuts.
The official cause of the fire has not been disclosed,
however, it is believed that the fire was caused by a
welding project within the building. LP fueled front end
loaders as well as several tanks of gas were removed
from the building.
Last Monday approximately 40 employees had been laid off
and only a skeleton crew is operating the plant.
