with his mom, where both Dylan and Mom helped with the
Silver Street Planting Project.
HURLEY – June 7, 2011
Hurley third grade teachers Melanie Erspamer and Mary
Ann Nicholls brought their students to Silver Street
yesterday to plant flowers along the city’s main street,
The 40 plus little gardeners had a big job to do as
there were approximately 66 planters that needed
planting.
This year the planters on the south side of Silver
Street were planted with Impatiens, a plant that does
well in the shade. On the north side of Silver Street
the students planted, sun loving Petunias.
The undermanned young gardeners did the project in
record time and had a lot of fun in the process. They
did a terrific job and by the time Independence Day
arrives the flowers will be coming along and the
planters will be looking good.
The event was organized by Jessica Bolich, the Chamber
Director and Heather Guyer Wisconsin Extension
Coordinator.
On hand to assist and instruct the young students were
Wisconsin Master Gardeners Jewel Lakvold, Diane
Fontecchio and Lou Bonagura. Additional assistance was
provided by Will Andresen, Iron County Sheriff Tony
Furyk, and Hurley Police Chief Dan Erspamer. Several
parents also provided assistance with the planting.
Last week, Guyer and Master Gardeners traveled to the
Hurley School where Stars students planted several large
flower pots that will sit in front of the school
building this summer. Participating in the after school
project was Gerry Traczyk, Carol Saari and several other volunteers.
The afternoon project is unusual in that the range of
the student’s ages varies more than in other projects.
The kids had to work in cool and windy weather. With a
frost anticipated for the evening, the school staff
placed the large pots indoors for the evening
