County Commission Sets Millage Rate

BESSEMER – June 10, 2011

Wednesday the County Board of Commissioners voted to apply the maximum permissible tax rate to Gogebic County properties.
Appearing before the commissioners was Tom Novascone Director of the county Equalization Office who presented the latest countywide property assessments and millage alternatives.

Novascone told the commissioners that the 2011 taxable values were $496,973,071, an increase from the 2010 values of 485,947,548.
Following a formula set by the State of Michigan, the bottom line was a millage rate of 6.5478. Under the law a maximum millage rate of 6.6592. Read the Calculations

The commissioners approved application of the maximum rate would increase the county revenue by a total of $69,194.
By choosing to go with the maximum rate there must be a truth in taxation hearing and will occur just prior to the next commission meeting, June 22, 2011.

The County Treasurer, Sue Pertile requested and received permission to purchase two foreclosed properties on behalf of the Gogebic County Land Bank. There are two potential purchasers for the properties, one located in Ironwood Township and another in the City of Ironwood.

The city has already waived their rights to the property within their limits and the Treasurer is waiting for the Township to waive their rights on the property located in the township.

The Commission acted on recommendations from the Personnel Committee to amend three part-time positions to full time status.
The three positions were previously full time but scaled back to part time under the new budget. The positions are Friend of the Court office full time, Treasurer office full time up from part-time, Prosecutor office full time up from part-time.

“Each one of these offices made an effort to try a half time position, worked at and came back to the board and gave us their problems with it “ said Commissioner Pezzetti, “and that is why the board is in favor of changing these to a full time position.”

Commissioner Gerovac explained that the change in FOC position would not increase the budget. “We appropriated $35,000 to the Friend of the Court. Whether that’s a full time or half time position it doesn’t cost us anymore or any less. It just makes sense to have a full time position there.”
