The Gogebic County
Relay for life began yesterday on the Gogebic Community
College Campus. The Relay For Life is a fundraising
event that benefits cancer research.
While the weather was less than ideal, the event was
well attended. After the sun went down the luminaries
were lit and so were many fire pits, where team members
huddled between laps.
The luminaries lining the walk are a somber reminder of
how much cancer affect s even a community as small as
Gogebic. “The first time that I saw all the luminaries,
my heart just stopped” a participant said.
While the Relay serves as a moment to remember those who
lost the battle against cancer, it is primarily a
celebration for those who have survived cancer.
Part of the Relay is the Survivors Lap where survivors
lead the way around the track while being honored and
applauded by all participants. Being a part of the
Survivors Lap allows survivors to celebrate what they’ve
overcome while inspiring and motivating their community
to fight. Survivors are proof that cancer can be
defeated.
The goal of the Relay For Life is to create a world
where more people survive cancer so they can celebrate
more birthdays. Who is a survivor? Anyone who has ever
heard the words “You have cancer”. All cancer survivors
in the community are invited to attend Relay For Life.
Fundraising events and personal fundraising had
accounted for more than $20,000 collected or pledged for
the charitable event.
The top Relay Teams were: PartyLite Global Fusion
$2,089, Marenisco EMS $620, and Big Powderhorn Mountain
$620.
The top individual fundraisers were: Tonya Wood $500,
JoAnne Monte $470, Geneva Smiles $305.
