Civic Center Seeks Approval For Well

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - June 16, 2011

Civic Center Manager, Brian Roehm and members of the Pat O’Donnell Civic Center appeared at the Ironwood Township Board of Trustees meeting yesterday.

Roehm and the board members want to sink a well at the civic center. Roehm told the Township Trustees that the winter water bill is approximately $8000. During the summer when there is no ice skating the water bill is $375. Roehm stated that the center doesn’t use anywhere near 375 billed by the Township.

The Township Supervisor, Kim Mattson told Roehm that the water franchise for the Township now belonged to the Gogebic Range Water Authority, and it was the GRWA that would have to approve the well.

Jean Verbos the Administrator of the GRWA happened to be at the meeting and told the Board Members that they would have to submit a profit and loss statement to the GRWA, showing that the water bill is proving to be a hardship. She also wanted to know who would sink the well and how much it was going to cost.

Roehm said that the cost was not be made public at this time. Accompanying Roehm was board member Jim Collins and Board President, Joe Metzger. They told the Township Trustees that although the Civic Center is owned by the City of Ironwood it serves the people of the entire county. Verbos acknowledged that, and stated “I think you should be commended for your new manager.”

The center uses 36,000 gallons of water for making ice. That is the water that they hope to replace with a well. The Township Trustees were told that the well would only be used to provide water to flood the rink for ice skating and other non non-potable purposes.
Jim Collins reminded the group that when the plans for the civic center were made that the blueprints referred to the center as the Gogebic County Recreational Facility.”

Trustee ob Frederickson asked if any Township Kids were on the State Champion Team. He was told yes and that there were players from Mercer to Marenisco on the team.
All communities, including the Township enjoy the benefits of the center, however, the Civic Center is solely supported by the city taxpayers.
