HOUGHTON - June 15, 2011 Construction of the new
Seaman Mineral Museum next to the Advanced Technology
Development Complex (ATDC) on Sharon Avenue at Garnet
Street is complete.
The new museum, featuring patina copper accents, is
intended to be a transitional home for the mineral
museum, which moved from the fifth floor of the EERC
last year to free up expanded research space. Longterm
plans call for the mineral museum to eventually move to
Quincy Hill in Hancock. At that time, the Houghton
building will become part of the adjacent ATDC, which
its design resembles.
Project architect Jennifer Towles worked closely with
museum director Ted Bornhorst to ensure that the size
and layout of space in the 9,000-square-foot building
met the museum's exhibit and equipment needs.
Museum staff will be installing exhibits throughout
the summer. The museum gift shop and two galleries are
expected to be open on July 5. The entire museum is
scheduled to be open this fall.
The architectural, engineering and planning firm was
Orchard, Hiltz and McCliment Inc.
