| Webber Fails To Produce Budget |

ONTONAGON – June 24,2011
With just ten days remaining in the school year,
Ontonagon School Superintendent, Grey Webber failed to
produce a budget for the 2010-2011 school year. As a
consequence, the Budget Hearing scheduled for Monday
night had to be cancelled and rescheduled for June 28,
at 5:30 p.m.
Things didn’t get better for Webber at the regular
school board meeting Monday night. Booster club member
Cindy LeGault questioned Webber on his lack of
communication with the booster club.
According to LeGault no one had talked to the club about
helping with the athletic expenses.
“The booster club had no clue of what was expected of
the club or what the school wanted the club to do” she
said.
Webber indicated that he did not want to dictate to the
club, that it was up to the club to decide what they
wanted to do
LeGault responded that the club was asking for
suggestions. She had hoped it could have been done prior
to the meeting.
Webber and LeGault agreed the booster club could not
support the entire athletics program, but she said the
club needs a goal to work for. She added the fact that
each sport will carry a separate fee and that there is
no family plan would make it very difficult for some
families to participate. She added the booster club
would be meeting on July 11, and would like to have
information before that meeting.
Facing serious financial problems the board voted to
adopt a Pay to Play athletic fee. The fee was set at
$100 per student for a varsity sport and a $60 fee for
participating in a junior varsity sport. This is a per
sport fee. The plan adopted by the Ontonagon School
Board is being accused of being discriminatory, in that
it discriminates against low income students.
