Festival Ironwood entered into last day Saturday. It
would be a long day filled with lots of music, dancing,
a car show, a car parade and conclude with an evening of
more music.
The morning began with a Big Top Pancake Breakfast,
organized by Lighthouse Faith Center. Later American
legion Post #5 raised the colors in what was described
as a Star Spangled Banner Ceremony.
The citywide sales began and as did the Alley Cat Garage
Car and Bike Parts Swap Meet, corner of Aurora and
Lowell Streets. At the depot an outdoor pool tournament
was taking place. The craft sales booths opened offering
a wide array of crafts for shoppers, and there was
strawberry shortcake organized by Ironwood Business and
Professional Women. There were more Ice Cream Treats, at
Ironwood Area Chamber of Commerce booth. None the
fabulous looking treats were sugar free. Oh well.
Slow Poke Da Clown returned Saturday making animal
balloons for the kids. Artist Cheryl Cunico was again
painting fantastic masks on children’s faces…
The World’s Largest Duck Pick, organized by Friends of
Festival Ironwood was open again as was the Fun Castle
Moonwalk Jumper.
The animals from
H.O.P.E Animals returned to the festival Saturday seeking caring
owners.
The 23rd Annual Old Depot Car Show was going on most of
the day. Sixty three great cars showed up for the event,
that will be reported in a separate story. At six
o’clock many of the cars were joined by other area
classics to cruise to the Memorial Building. From there
the cars returned along Aurora and continued to Hurley.

This year all the musical entertainment was free to the
public, no admission, and no wrist bands. The
entertainment was paid for by the Festival Ironwood
Sponsors. The first group to perform Saturday was the
Ranch Boys, who played and sang everyone’s favorite
Country & Western songs.
Following the Ranch Boys, was the Gogebic Range Concert
Band. The GRCB performed an entire program for the large
audience that gathered under the big tent. The band
performed a dozen wonderful great songs: The Fairest of
the Fair; American Flourish; Beyond the Horizon; two
songs from Carmen Suite; Hollywood Milestones; Mancini
Magic; Just A Closer Walk with Thee; Final Countdown;
Big Band Bash; T.D.'s Boogie Woogie; Hey its Polka Time
(video below) and God Bless America. The band was really
outstanding. Strangely, the acoustics under the big tent are
superior to those at the Longyear Park band shell.
Dancers from the Ironwood Dance Company performed under
the tent following the GRCB. There was a large audience
that gathered for the performances. Mark Silver acted as
the Master of Ceremony for the show.
The last musical performance of the day and of the
Festival was by Johnny Trash and Jimmy Lee. An area
favorite, they did not disappoint the large
crowd that came to hear them perform and close the
festival.
