BERGLAND – July 21, 2011
The Gogebic Ontonagon Intermediate School District held
its 2011/2012 organizational meeting in Bergland
yesterday.
Russ Bailey and Ann Wuorinen were reelected to the board
and were sworn in at the beginning of yesterday’s
meeting. The two no sooner finished saying I do
that they were elected to be office; Wuorinen was
elected President and Bailey was elected Vice President
for the next school year. Ed Martinson was appointed
Secretary for the board and Sonny Minkin was elected
Treasurer.
As is true of all organizational meetings, the remainder
of the time was spent reaffirming a great deal of
technical rather than interesting stuff. What banks get
the deposits, who signs what, who will be the legal
representatives and more…..
The regular July meeting took place immediately
following the organizational meeting.
Marjorie Leaf, Director of Special Education advised the
board that Sarah Wertenberger had been hired as a new
Special Ed. Teacher in Ontonagon.
Leif also told the board also learned that a special
needs student previously administered at home would be
entering the Ironwood School District. The student will
be requiring a one on one aide. The cost of the service
will be paid by the GOISD.
Shawn Kolbus, Director of Career Tech Education, told
the board that the building trades program had been
reduced to a 1/3 position by Ontonagon Superintendent
Gray Webber. The instructor refused to stay on at that
level. The GOISD is currently paying for that 1/3
portion.
The GOISD Board members approved a tentative agreement
with their union personnel.
During his report to the board; GOISD Superintendent
Bruce Mayle, introduced the new Michigan Tenure Law.
Mayle discussed some of the highlights of the new law.
The members were given copies of the 10 page synopsis.
We will be publishing a copy for our readers later
today.
