The Milltown Heritage
Days celebration kicked off Friday evening with a street
dance that was center for teens and adults alike.
Saturday was to the main focus of the Heritage Days
events. Several events were cancelled due to the heavy
rains that moved into the area mid-day. The Strongest man
contest was cancelled as was the lumberjack competition.
Most of the craft vendors packed it in however, a few
hung in there.
The weather system moved through just in time to allow
the great music concerts to go outdoors as scheduled.
Attendees were told that the concerts would move indoors
should the rain reoccur. That would not be the case.
Opening the evening’s performances was the Gogebic
Range Concert Band. The GRCB played a full program
including some new songs worked into this year’s
repertoire.
As always the band under the direction of Larry Gabka
did a great job. The GRCB was followed by a great performance of the
"Jugendblasorchester" wind ensemble from Stassfurt,
Germany, another renowned German youth orchestra.
Last year the Marenisco Heritage Festival featured
concerts by the fabulous Youth Orchestra from Wertingen
Germany. The Jugendblasorchester wind ensemble plays a
totally different style of music, less classical, but
just as great as their Wertingen counterparts.
The wind ensemble played many popular tunes, marches and
polkas familiar to their American audience. The group
was well liked and closed to a standing ovation so
rightfully deserved. For their finale the ensemble
performed “Unter dem Sternenbanner”; Star and Stripes
Forever.
Again, this year the great Youth Orchestra was brought
to Marenisco as part of the Cultural Exchange Program.
They arrived here through the efforts Bruce Mahler.
While in Marenisco the young musicians stayed with host
families, .
The Youth Orchestra is to European music as is an
Olympic training camp to an athlete.
