Group Hears Vision for Downtown

Ironwood - April 23, 2009

Tuesday evening there was a town hall meeting at the Ironwood Memorial Building. The purpose of the meeting was to receive input from residents relative to their vision for downtown Ironwood. The city has become a Blueprint city, evidently one of a select few chosen for the project. The meeting was conducted by Dolores Palma of Hyett-Palma, a nationally recognized "downtown" consulting firm. Ms. Palma was joined by Doyle Hyatt, her partner, Cathi Cole from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Cathi is a Business Development Manager and Community Assistance Specialist. Also on hand was Joseph B. Borgstrom who is Director of Specialized Technical Assistance & Revitalization Strategy Division. Joe is the go to guy in this project. He will be finding sources for all that we need to make our revitalization project a success. Good luck Joe!

Cheap Is What Cheap Gets

The Gogebic-Iron Wastewater Authority and The Gogebic-Iron Wastewater Board met concurrently Wednesday morning for their monthly meeting. The meeting was brief due to other commitments by the City of Ironwood representatives.

Of interest to taxpayers would be the outcome of near fatally wounded front end loader previously discussed in IronwoodInfo. You may recall that the Wastewater front end loader was in poor repair. It was old and tired and just as we all have faced this situation with our own automobiles, the choices were limited. Pay to repair the existing one or buy a new one.

Late Winter Storm Creates
Hazardous  Driving Conditions

Ironwood - Aril 21, 2009

The late season storm that hit the local area brought hazardous driving conditions for  motorists. Pictured above a small vehicle went off US 2 just east of the Industrial Park entrance. There were no injuries to either car or passengers, however the wrecker was required to retrieve the vehicle from the ditch. Ironwood Public Safety Officers were at the scene and traffic was moved to the extreme left lane.

Over six inches of snow have fell so far with more to come.

The Winter Storm Warning is now in effect until 1 PM CDT this afternoon.

Wet snow will continue to fall heavy at times this morning with additional amounts of 1 to 4 inches expected. The most snow will fall inland from Ironwood to Marenisco. The heavy wet snow combined with wind gusts to 25 mph today could damage trees and produce power outages.

The last heavy snowfall event that happened in Late April or even May would have been back in 2002, states Andrew Just of the National Weather Service in Negaunee Township.

That storm was on on April 28 and it produced 8.5 inches, but this time around, the NWS is expecting around a foot of snow at their office by the time the storm winds down Tuesday night.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather
conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency. If you must
travel... keep an extra flashlight...food... and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Shedding Cabin Fever

Ironwood/Houghton - April 20, 2009

From Ironwood to Houghton folks were leaving their cabin fever behind this past weekend and taking off for spring shopping.  In Ironwood, the action was at the Pat O'Donnell Civic Center, where the Annual Spring Craft Show took place. Vendors selling every kind of arts and crafts imaginable were on hand at the Pat. The Spring craft show like the Home Show prove how the Civic Center earns its keep in Ironwood.

At the Copper Country Mall in Houghton there were plenty of shoppers out looking for items to improve their homes. Many shoppers told us they would be fixing up and staying home for the near future. Perhaps the national recession will be a plus to local business men and women.

Name of product: Kidde XL Fire Extinguishers

Units: About 167,000

Distributor: Walter Kidde Portable Equipment Inc., of Mebane, N.C.

If the gauge is not in the red zone, but you have questions about an extinguisher within the listed model numbers, please contact Kidde for additional information.

Consumer Contact: For additional information, contact Kidde at (888) 345-4407 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or visit the firm’s Web site at www.Kidde.com
Kidde, in conjunction with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is announcing a voluntary recall to replace certain XL Fire Extinguisher units because they may lose pressure faster than others due to an off-specification lubricant. This loss of pressure may result in the extinguisher failing to operate when activated. The affected units were manufactured in Mexico between October 2007 and April 2008. Kidde has no record of injuries due to the affected extinguishers.

All extinguishers have the potential to lose pressure, and the gauges on the affected units continue to function and will alert you to any pressure loss. Because Kidde is concerned with product quality, we are working voluntarily with the CPSC to replace those affected extinguishers whose gauges are in the red.

Affected Items:

XL Models:

FX340H
FX340GW
XL5MR
FX210R

Wakefield Council
Supports 911 Ballot Issue

Wakefield - April 16, 2009

Monday evening the Wakefield City Council voted unanimously to support the E911 rate surcharge request on the May ballot. 911 coordinator, Jim Loeper address the city commissioners prior to the vote. Jim, has been traveling to local government meetings spreading the information relative to the surcharge request. As previously reported in IronwoodInfo, the increase in the rate surcharge was brought about by the significant increase in costs of dispatch services. The current dispatch services are performed by the State Police in Negaunee. The Gogebic 911 Committee is hoping to move the service to nearby Iron County and to bring those services to Gogebic County when economically feasible. Last month the increase in the 911 line surcharge was also endorsed by the Wakefield Township board.

In other matters the council approved the use of the city pavilion for this summer's Memory Walk, a fundraiser event for the Alzheimer Association.
