2009 - Iron County Fair Slideshow

Saxon - August 3, 2009

Saturday was "Senior Day" at the Iron County Fair, but the fairgrounds was filled with people of all ages. The on and off again rain may have dampened the grass, but it in no way dampened the spirits of fairgoers!

By mid-afternoon the midway rides were filled with teens enjoying the rides and amusements that teens have enjoyed for decades past.

There were plenty of rides for kids of any age, from teens to tots, something for all. Some things never change, kids were riding and "enjoying" the very same rides I enjoyed 60 years ago. No i-pods or game-boys  required!

The fair seemed to be much better than just a few years ago. Everything that we look for at summer fairs was to be found at the Iron County Fair.

There were competitive events throughout the day such as the kids Tractor Pull. There were other events as well including the Mud Racing, Softball and Volleyball tournaments.

Of course there were the art, crafts and gardening exhibits. Pictured above is Carol Brettingten, one of the fair directors. Carol exhibited the beautiful flower box pictured above. Carol also displayed several hanging baskets and provided the wheel barrow plantings found all around the fairgrounds.

There were animals to satisfy any animal lover. They came in every shape and size imaginable from the magnificent  Belgian Stallions to the, grand prize market sheep.

There was music for everyone. The morning began with a Goldenaire's concert under the pavilion , which later moved outdoors to the beergarten, Where the group played some beer drinking songs, along with a variety of music that te Corps is famous for.  The concert began with the presenting of the colors by the Corps Honor Guard. The Goldenaires wasted no time in demonstrating why they are who they are. The group performed "The Star Spangled Banner" which was arranged by Dan Patrone, Musical Director. Regrettably,  this was the first time that I have heard this arrangement. Dan's arrangement the greatest arrangements of our National Anthem, this writer has ever heard. I've played the song hundreds of times in school, in the Marine Corps Fourth Division Band and numerous other bands. Dan's version is simply the greatest. I know that's a lot of superlatives and deservingly so!

Johnny Trash and Richie Yurkovich also entertained the crowds under the pavilion
