Rayner Reduces
E-TC Deficit
EWEN -- Two years ago, Ewen-Trout
Creek School District was more than a
million and a half dollars in debt.
Since that time, the district has hired James
Rayner to be its Superintendent, and has reduced
its deficit in half. The Ewen Trout Creek School
District headed up by Rayner and supported
by the District staff has reduced the deficit to
$761,000 .
Rayner had accomplished much the same thing
while employed as the Superintendent of the
Ironwood School District.
Rayner was hired by the IASD to eliminate its
$500,000 deficit and that is exactly what he
did. In just three year years Rayner moved the
struggling district to a positive General Fund
Balance.

Township Trustees Reject
Appeal Last evening the
Ironwood Township Board of Trustees
voted 4-2 to reject an appeal by Snow
Country Contracting. Tom Schneller had
appealed a decision of the Township
Planning Commission that denied him a
Condition Use Permit that would have
allowed him to operate a gravel pit on
Northstar Road.
Other than Schneller remarks, no public
testimony was heard. Schneller was not
allowed to present new evidence; he
could only address the issues previously
before the Planning Commission. One by
one Schneller discussed the testimony
given at the previous public hearing and
in each case discussed where the
testimony had been in error.
The matter came to a vote when Trustee
Bob Fredrickson made a motion to deny
the appeal the motion was supported by
Trustee Bernie Brunello and after no
further discussion the Board voted 4-2
to reject the appeal and let stand the
Planning and Zoning Board’s decision.
Voting to turn down the appeal were
Trustees: Fredrickson, Brunello and
Maki, and Township Treasurer Jyl Olson.
Trustee Steve Boyd was not allowed to
vote on the appeal of his decision as a
Township Planner.
Voting no to the motion meant approving
Schneller’s appeal. The two no votes
were cast by Township Supervisor Kim
Mattson and Township Clerk Gayla Salmi. |

US Rep. Stupak is Commencement Speaker
by Marcia Goodrich, senior writer
HOUGHTON - Congressman Bart Stupak will
address nearly 300 graduates at Midyear
Commencement ceremonies Saturday, Dec. 11.
A total of 242 students will be receiving
bachelor's degrees. In addition, 26 master's
degrees and 18 doctorates will be awarded.
Stupak will receive an Honorary Doctorate
in Environmental and Energy Policy. He is
retiring in January after 18 years of
service to Michigan's 1st Congressional
District.
He is a member of the House Energy and
Commerce Committee and, as the ranking
Democrat, chair of the Oversight and
Investigations Subcommittee.
Before his election in 1992, Stupak was a
Michigan state representative and worked as
an Escanaba police officer and Michigan
State Police trooper. He also practiced law.
A graduate of Gladstone High School, he
earned an associate degree from Northwestern
Michigan College, a bachelor's degree in
criminal justice from Northern Michigan
University and a law degree from Thomas M.
Cooley Law School in Lansing.
Health care has been a priority for
Stupak since he was elected to Congress,
when he pledged not to accept the insurance
that members of Congress receive until all
Americans could have access to that same
quality health care.
He has been a leader in the international
effort to ban the sale and diversion of the
Great Lakes and opposed the drilling for oil
and gas beneath the Great Lakes.
Stupak founded and co chaired the
Congressional Law Enforcement Caucus, a
bipartisan organization that provides the
law enforcement community with an avenue to
participate in the legislative process.
He has been a leader in homeland
security, particularly in connection with
programs to train and equip local law
enforcement officers and other first
responders. In addition, Stupak co chairs
the Congressional Northern Border Caucus.

Most low birth weight babies
become productive adults
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Most survivors of
extremely low birth weight grow up to become
productive adults, according to a study led
by a Michigan State University economist.
Extremely low birth weight is defined as
less than about 2.2 pounds. About one in 200
babies is born at that size. But because
relatively few survived prior to the 1980s,
few studies have examined their adult
outcomes.
