Holiday Energy
Use Can Add Up!
UPPCO Offers
Holiday Energy
Savings Tips
(Ishpeming,
MI) - Upper
Peninsula Power
Company (UPPCO)
offers a wide
array of energy
saving ideas and
safety tips for
customers during
the holiday
season. UPPCO
urges customers
to consider
using
light-emitting-diode
(LED) holiday
lights as they
use up to 90
percent less
electricity,
last up to ten
times longer
than standard
bulbs, produce
almost no heat
and are very
durable. LED
lights, while
more expensive
to buy, have an
encased
solid-state
semi-conductor
chip that
provides a
bright light at
significantly
less operating
cost than a
conventional
filament bulb.
There may be
incentive
rebates
available
through local
retailers to
encourage the
purchase of LED
lights. The cost
to keep a string
of 100 LED
lights operating
for an entire
month is only
about 10 cents,
compared to
conventional
lights that
could cost
$1.00.

Marty's @
Lambeau I don't know if you heard
the news. Marty's will be playing the half
time show December 5th at Lambeau Field. The
Packers will be playing SanFrancisco. It is
the Packer's throwback game. They will be
wearing their blue and gold uniforms from
the 20's (not the actually uniforms , but
replicas, ha ha). They asked us , in honor
of the throwback game, to play some of our
big band swing music. As most of us know,
half time shows are not televised but, I'm
sure we will have video of our performance
at a later date.
We have put on literally thousands of
performances over the years. I think I can
say that this is our biggest. We have played
for some big crowds but, never have we
played for 78,000 people at one time. We are
honored and humbled by this invitation to
play on the most hallowed of grounds in the
NFL, Lambeau Field.

Road
Commission Curtails Snow Removal
BESSEMER - The Gogebic County
Commissioners received and placed on
file a letter from the County Road
Commission, dated November 9, 2010. The
letter written by Darren Pionk,
representing the Gogebic County Road
Commission describes to the County
Commissioners, the new and improved plan
for county snow removal. Of course since
the Road Commission doesn’t really
remove snow – just push it to the side,
one has to wonder why we always refer to
it as snow removal.

the local Wastewater Board and Wastewater Authority. The matter was
discussed in this week’s meeting of the Authority/ Board. Currently
the Biosolids are delivered to and spread out on local farms. The
problem is that there is an ever decreasing number of working farms
within the area where the delivery of waste material is cost productive.

Bessemer Wiz Kids
Prevail Over Manistique
MARQUETTE - Tuesday, the
Bessemer Wiz Kids traveled to
Marquette to compete in the 2010
WMNUTV High School Bowl. The
team would face Manistique early
Wednesday morning. Manistique
played Ironwood in their first
round game and won that match
scoring well over 200 points.
The Bessemer team drew a bye in
the first round however,
just three
weeks ago, the team won the
Varsity Division of the GOISD
Quiz Bowl at GCC
.
It was believed that the
Bessemer - Manistique match
would be a tough one and that
certainly proved to be the case.
Trailing through most of the
match Bessemer came on strong
with just seconds to go and won
the match 250-240. That is a
high scoring game on High School
Bowl. Ten points is as close as
it gets, just one bonus
question.
David Rowe, the Bessemer Coach
said “It was the most exciting
match we have ever played in.”
The match will air on January
1st and 3rd .
Bessemer will play again on
January 12 in the third round.
Congratulations once again to
Dave and the Quiz Bowl Team!

In Da Woods
by Melanie B. Fullman, US Forest
Service
If you build
it, they will come!
There’s been two arched
culverts in a small creek on a local
Forest road for years. The culverts
worked fine for passing water and
vehicles. Over time, the corrugated
pipes even accumulated gravel and
small rocks, so their bottoms were a
bit more natural – slightly less
intimidating and metallic. Back in
the day, there had been reports of
brook trout in that stream. But
eventually, the fish, peering into
what must have seemed like a 50’
tunnel, decided the culverts were
dark and scary. So they went away.

November
is Native American Heritage Month
Information courtesy of
the Bureau of Indian Affairs, U.S. Department of the Interior
What started at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a
day of recognition for the significant
contributions the first Americans made to
the establishment and growth of the U.S.,
has resulted in a whole month being
designated for that purpose.
One of
the very proponents of an American Indian
Day was Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a Seneca
Indian, who was the director of the Museum
of Arts and Science in Rochester, N.Y. He
persuaded the Boy Scouts of America to set
aside a day for the "First Americans" and
for three years they adopted such a day.
