In Da Woods
Some Assembly Requiredby Melanie B.
Fullman, US Forest Service
Back in June
In early June – National Trails Day, to be
exact – a dozen North Country Trail Association
volunteers spent a tough day getting TWO 28’
treated beams to a new bridge site on the trail
between Great Conglomerate and Potawatomi Falls.
The fact that the bridge is a mile from the
closest road created all kinds of logistical
challenges. Nevertheless, the determined group
heaved, lugged, pushed, and maneuvered the
beams, each weighing about 600 pounds, from the
parking lot to the trail.

USDA settles discrimination
case with Native Americans
USDA has announced a settlement in a class
action lawsuit brought by Native Americans. The
case alleged discrimination in USDA’s farm loan
program dating back to 1981. The suit was filed
the day after Thanksgiving in 1999. Under the
agreement, USDA will pay $680 million to
thousands of Native American farmers and
ranchers and forgive up to $80 million in
outstanding farm loan debt. The settlement also
establishes a Native American Farmer and Rancher
Council to make ag department programs more
accessible to Native Americans.
Unlike the settlement with black farmers where
Congress resurrected late-filed claims requiring
that an additional $1.25 billion be approved by
Congress, this settlement will be paid out of
the U.S. Treasury Judgment Fund and does not
require Congressional appropriation. |
