Education Grants for Single Moms
in Wisconsin
It is the established fact that education plays
vital role in socio economic mobility. Education
especially post secondary education unlocks the
doors of overwhelming job opportunities with high
salary rates for an individual. All presidents of
USA encourage people encompassing single moms and
low income hardworking employees, to acquire higher
education to improve their earning potential.
Government has pushed Congress to pass new rules for
increment of Pell Grants for single mothers of
Wisconsin who want to return to college.
If you’ve spent much
time in the woods
lately, you’ve probably
noticed a LOT of grouse!
Fluctuating in rather
predictable 10 year
cycles, the current
population certainly
seems to be at a high
point. Whether you like
to hunt grouse with a
shotgun or camera, this
autumn is excellent for
finding our resident
“partridge” or as some
call them, simply
“birds”.

Unfriendly
Friend$ Are At It Again!
The
unfriendly friends of the
Library are at it again. The
Library gang is making
another attempt to pass a
millage to renovate the
Carnegie. That's what city
Planner Courtland Geib,
pictured at far left, told
the other members of the
Planning Commission.
Although the numbers are a
bit smaller than before, the
rhetoric is still the same old
rhetoric.
All the tired
excuses from the prior
millage battle are already being
given vitamin shots for
another attempt to bamboozle
the over taxed citizens of
Ironwood.
At Wednesday night Planning
Commission meeting the
Imo limos were lining
up to see just how many more
dollars they could squeeze
out of the U.P.’s most
overburdened taxpayers.
Money for the Sisu, money
for the Miners Park, Money
for the Library and on and
on it goes.
One has to wonder why Mayor
Booby, his wife, Aunt Gemema,
Recall me Too Semo, our City
manager, His wife and the
rest of the Unfriendly
Friend$ of the Library, think
that the taxpayers have an
endless supply of money to
support their unfriendly and
ugly $pending habits; and at
the same time they expect
City Taxpayers to do without
services; and believe
that city employees
should be furloughed.
Undoubtedly stealing from the living
comes easy to those so who
are quick to steal from the
residents of Riverside
Cemetery.
Yup, they all go to
Church on Sundays!

rhetoric on how much an

community needs to
spend another million bucks
needlessly.

Don't Blame
Dairy Cows for (Greenhouse)
Gas Emissions
by
Marcia Goodrich, senior
writer
Forget all the tacky
jokes about cow flatulence
causing climate change. A
new study reports that the
dairy industry is
responsible for only about
2.0 percent of all US
greenhouse gas emissions.
The study, led by the
University of Arkansas in
association with Michigan
Technological University,
measures the carbon
footprint of a gallon of
fluid milk from farm to
table and uses 2007 and 2008
data from more than 500
dairy farms and 50 dairy
processors, as well as data
from more than 210,000 round
trips transporting milk from
farm to processing plant. It
was commissioned by the
Innovation Center for the US
Dairy, an industry-wide
group.

Center Reports Expose Resurgence
of Debtors’ Prisons
NEW YORK – Poor defendants are
being jailed at increasingly
alarming rates for failing to
pay legal debts they can never
hope to afford, according to two
reports released today by the
American Civil Liberties Union
and the Brennan Center for
Justice.
The reports detail how
Michigan and other states across
the country, in the face of
mounting budget deficits, are
more aggressively targeting poor
people who have already served
their criminal sentences to pay
fines that they cannot afford.
In doing so, these states are
undermining re-entry prospects,
paving the way back to prison or
jail for these individuals and
burdening the public with yet
more costs.

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP -
Tuesday evening the Ironwood School District held a community forum
at Gogebic Community College. The focus of the forum was the
district’s “Character Education “program; Sandy Swartz, Character
Education Consultant, was the guest speaker. Mrs. Swartz has been in

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP
- At last night’s regular meeting of the
Gogebic Community College Board of Trustees,
the Board reviewed a draft of the annual
goals for the 2010/11 academic year. The
goals include a number of initiatives
including the review and modification of
processes and practices to better ensure
student success; also, the standardization
of institutional branding, the completion
and publishing of the emergency management
procedures manual, consideration of new and
revised programs and services, among others.
Pondering what natural resource to write
about this week, I was reminded of the most
important one that I encounter in the woods
– people. Specifically, our local “army” of
volunteers.
National Public Lands Day was celebrated
last weekend and, as has often been the
case, more than 20 volunteers showed up to
help out. They hailed from Wakefield,
Bessemer, Ironwood, Marenisco, Watersmeet,
and even Land O’Lakes, and nearly everyone
looked familiar. This wasn’t a
one-day-a-year crowd! These folks regularly
donate time year-round on a whole slew of
projects that benefit the rest of us – like
maintaining trails, getting rid of
non-native invasives, and picking up trash
in campgrounds and day use areas.
"Gentleman" Gene Hesterberg, 92, who
booted more than one errant forestry student
back onto the road to graduation and found
jobs for countless others, died Sunday,
Sept. 26, at the Delaware House of
PortagePointe, where he had lived for the
past two years.
HANCOCK, MI – The Michigan College Access
Network (MCAN) has announced that 14
Michigan communities will collectively
receive more than $350,000 to support
student access to and success in college.
Among the grant recipients is Finlandia
University, which was awarded a 12-month,
$8,000 planning grant to develop a
community-based local college access network
in the western U.P. The network will
coordinate programs, services, and resources
that lower the barriers preventing students,
particularly low-income and first-generation
students, from pursuing postsecondary
educational opportunities.
Flags throughout Michigan are at half-staff
today in memory of Army Spc. Deangelo Snow, 22,
of Saginaw, who died Sept. 17 in the Kandahar
province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the
526th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade
Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air
Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky. Flags will return
to full-staff Wednesday, Sept. 29.
Sewer Project
Under Fire

On Saturday, September
25, 2010, Ainikin Tupa of Thunder Bay, Ontario
was the host for the annual Midwest District
Kalevan Naisen meeting. This meeting was held at
the beautiful "Suomi Koti". Stations set up for
each officer and a ceremonial entrance of the
officers takes place. There were 30 ladies in
attendance this year. The group sang the
National Anthems (USA and Canada) and then
carried on the business of the day. Delegates
from each Tupa gave their reports and then it
was on to regular unfinished and new business.
The Ainikin Tupa will be hosting a fashion show
on Sunday, October 10, 2010 in Thunder Bay. It
will be "A Century of Fashion Tradition,
1910-2010" with models wearing samples of
fashion over the 100-year period. A luncheon
followed at the Hilldale Lutheran Church. The
drive to Thunder Bay from Michigan on Friday was
a rainy one, but heading home Saturday the sun
was shining and the fall colors were fantastic.
Ainon Tupa #13 of Mass City, Michigan will be
the host for next year's District meeting.

This weekend the Upper Peninsula Fire Chiefs’ Association held its
fall meeting at the VFW Hall in Wakefield Michigan. Fire Chiefs from
several western U.P.fire departments attended the meeting. The Fire
Marshall was unable to attend the Wakefield meeting; however, he was
able to send a message to the group by way of OFFT Region 1
Supervisor Dan Hammerberg.
An opening reception was held for designer Wendy Brawer at the
Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock, Michigan. The reception
marked the opening of the designer’s exhibit “Green Maps of the
World”.
Friday night there was to be a candle light vigil
honoring the victims of the Pabst Mine accident 84
years ago. In that incident three miners were killed
in the mine collapse. Forty three other trapped
miners were rescued.
The trail hike and vigil was promoted by the FMMHP.
It was to be their last hike of the season.
The event was attended by less than half of those
attending last year’s vigil; that evening only 25
people attended the vigil.
Interesting that twenty to thirty times as many
people attended the Hurley - Bessemer football game
that took place at the exact same time as the vigil.

the unexpired term of Pete Matonich.

selected as Gogebic County Sheriff.
At Monday night's meeting the Council narrowed their search to four
excellen<,,,,,,,,t applicants; Allen Archie, Glen Pavlovich, Paul
Semmerling and Olsen.
The Council moved quickly last night to select Olsen who immediately
took the oath of office.
IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - Last
evening, Tim Skubick anchor and
producer of “Off the Record” spoke
to an audience at Gogebic Community
college. Skubick’s Public T.V. show
is a very well watched program in
the U.P. as it is in the rest of the
State of Michigan.
Much of his success is due to his
tough and solid questioning of our
political leaders, and through this
questioning he hopes to make his
viewers more knowledgeable voters.
An interesting portion of Skubick’s
talk focused on the voter’s choice
to impose term limits on our
politicians here in Michigan. While
well intended, term limits have had
an adverse effect on our state.
